Snapchat Wallet: A Concept
During a product design assessment round, I was tasked with imagining and designing an e-wallet feature in Snapchat.
The Design Brief
The design had to entail features for allowing users to send and request money from their friends.
My Role
I was responsible for creating the user research, use cases, user flows, wire-framing, and prototyping.
About Snapchat
Snapchat is an American multimedia messaging app developed by Snap Inc., originally Snapchat Inc. One of the principal features of Snapchat is that pictures and messages are usually only available for a short time before they become inaccessible to their recipients.
Ideology
While segregating the payment as its own in-app salient feature, Snap Money combines the previous user engagement based on visual content sharing and merges the experience to build something fun and unique in the world of e-transactions. Keeping the target audience in mind, the Snapchat Money design has to be simple and intuitive. Just like how one takes a snap and sends it to their friends, sharing money will be made quick and fun.
Research
With a new feature that does something completely different as compared to what Snapchat primarily does, it was important to understand the user sentiment and expectations from this feature. The key insights were as follows:

-
Snapchat is used mostly to communicate creatively with friends and family.
-
Although it is their top 3 go-to social media app, they still do not find it better than apps like Instagram.
-
They like Snapchat mostly for the filters.
-
They would like to try the Snapchat wallet feature mostly for tasks like ordering food directly through the app.
-
The current generation wants to do things quickly so a small payment process would be beneficial.
-
They might face security issues with using a wallet on Snapchat.
-
They would definitely like a 'Shop' feature integrated with wallet.

Assumptions
-
To send Snapchat money, the user has to link their external sources first.
-
If not linked, then the user can only receive or request money.
-
Money stays in the form of Snapchat money and cannot be transferred to an external source.
-
Money can be transferred intra-Snapchat and stored in the Snapchat wallet.
-
Allowed to link just one type of payment, for the scope of this case study.
-
Not exploring the scope of sending money to a group.
-
Supposing, India is the first country to get Snapchat Wallet.
-
Money can only be requested from people who are in friend list.
Proposed Use Cases
The design exercise has been divided into 4 use cases:

-
On boarding (linking payment methods)
-
Sending Money
-
Receiving Money
-
Requesting Money
User Flows

#1 User On-Boarding Flow

#2 Sending Money

#3 Receiving Money

#4 Requesting Money
Sketching
The exercise was started with scribbling some windows on an iPad. The following are the important screens at I sketched quickly:

Future Scope
How Snapchat Wallet might be used:

-
Ability to send money through funky filters. Ability to snap and shop.

-
Allow users to take a picture of an item they like, the items get searched on the internet and the user can purchase the item through Snapchat Wallet.

-
Click on advertisements to order food, clothes, etc.

-
Shop or order stuff directly through maps.

-
Budgeting feature for target audience.

-
Build more trust regarding Snapchat wallet.
Learnings
The design exercise helped me to see through the eyes of a younger audience who is creative in both expressing themselves and how they reimagine some of their favourite apps as. The study helped me see Snapchat in a new light and the potential it has in digital payment realm.
